About Dental Implants
Dental implants are considered prosthetic teeth, designed to mimic both the tooth root for healthy bone retention and the missing tooth with a post and custom dental crown.
They can be used to replace a single missing tooth or to permanently secure a denture when all upper or lower teeth are lost.
The implant consists of 3 basic parts: the titanium post, a dental crown and an abutment that connects them. Dental implants can be placed without having to reduce the integrity of neighboring teeth as they are an independent restoration. This is another key benefit for your overall dental health.
All On Four
Dr. Marra also offers a procedure known commonly as “all-on-four”. This involves the use of as few as four strategically placed dental implants that secure a full upper or lower denture. In some cases, smaller implants are used for faster healing and treatment times.
Dental Implant Process
The process for placing dental implants is multi step and will take place over a period of several months. This is due to the time necessary for the bone and soft tissues to heal after the post is implanted.
Dr. Marra will explain all aspects of the your specific treatment plan, including expected number of visits, and completes all phases of the procedure in his Cohoes dentist office.
The first step is treatment planning using advanced digital technology, including CAT scans for high resolution, 3-D images of your jaw. This enables Dr. Marra to provide the most accurate placement possible for a comfortable and lasting result.
A period of 3-6 months is typically needed for complete healing of the bone before the impressions are taken to create a custom dental crown to be placed on the titanium post. At this time, and if necessary, the second piece of the implant, the abutment, will be attached.
Once complete, your dental crown will be permanently placed and your new dental implant will enable you to enjoy the best possible quality of life with a normal diet and speech.
